How Often Should You Change Your 911 GT3 Spark Plugs?

After reviewing the above, you may wonder why Porsche mandates such frequent spark plug changes on the 911 GT3.

There have been three engine revisions to the MA1.75 engine, the first 785 cars built used the E revision but all were recalled and replaced with the second F revision engine. There should be no E engines left as far as we are aware.

Some owners, particularly those who frequent the track and spend a lot of time near the 9,000RPM limiter have noticed misfires in the F revision engines. We’ve found valve train rocker arm defects at the source of this issue. Porsche offers all 991.1 GT3 owners a generous, 10-year, 120,000-mile warranty. If you are still within the warranty period, high RPM misfire issues may be resolved by an engine replacement to the latest G revision.

It’s important to follow Porsche’s maintenance guidelines strictly and to maintain service records so that any possible engine issues during this generous warranty period are covered. Once these issues started to become widespread, we noticed that Porsche updated its service schedule to include spark plug replacement every 12,000 miles. We suspect Porsche made this change to ensure that the engine has the lowest chance of developing misfires. Still, an engine that does exhibit misfires despite frequent spark plugs changes would qualify for replacement.

To ensure warranty coverage is maintained, we service all 991.1 GT3s with Porsche A40 approved engine oils and the recommended 999-170-153-91 spark plugs. Service records are kept on file that owners can request at any time.

How Often Should You Change the Air Filters on Your 991.1 GT3 RS?

The 991.1 GT3 RS engine air filters sit behind the rear wheels and are fed directly by the large side air intakes. Rocks and other debris will hit the air filter surface, especially if the car is driven close behind other cars at high speeds, and will start to tear through the air filter surface. Porsche recommends changing the RS air filters every 6,000 miles to ensure that they don’t get clogged by debris or tear, allowing unfiltered air into the engine.
